South Indian Sambar Recipe | Sambar Recipe | Gujarati Rasoi


Sambar is a traditional South Indian recipe which is usually enjoyed with Dosa, Idli or Uttapa. Sambar is a dal based recipe in which the dal is cooked with some vegetables and traditional South Indian spices. If you are preparing Dosa, Idli or Medu Vada Sambar is must.   • 1 Cup Tur Dal
  • 6-8 Boiled Drumsticks
  • 1 Diced Onion
  • 1 Diced Tomato
  • 1 Diced Potato
  • Turmeric Powder
  • Dhana Jeera Powder
  • Red Chilli Powder
  • Sambar Masala
  • Water Used to Soak Tamarind (Imli)
For Tadka:
  • 1 Teaspoon Mustard Seeds (Rai)
  • ½ Teaspoon Asafoetida (Hing)
  • 3-4 Dried Red Chillies (Sukhi Lal Mirch)
  • 8-10 Curry Leaves (Kadi Patta)
  • Oil
Procedure:
  1. In a cooker, take some water and place an utensil in it.
  2. Now in that utensil add tur dal, onion, tomato, potato, salt and ½ teaspoon turmeric powder.
  3. Add water as per requirement and mix well.
  4. Cook it for 3-4 whistles.
  5. When dal is cooked, take it in a utensil and whisk it well. Add water if required.
  6. Now add ½ teaspoon turmeric powder, 2 teaspoons dhana jeera powder, 1-1.5 teaspoon red chilli powder, 2-2.5 teaspoon sambar masala and mix well.
  7. Add water used to soak tamarind.
  8. Add boiled drumsticks, salt and mix well.
  9. In a small utensil heat oil and prepare tempering with mustard seeds, asafoetida, curry leaves and dried red chillies.
  10. Pour this tempering over the sambar and mix well.
  11. South Indian sambar is ready.
