Gujarati Traditional Khatta Mag Ni Recipe is very quick to make and has the amazing spicy and tangy taste. This recipe is a very healthy recipe as it is prepared using green moong. The sour taste to this Gujarati recipe is due to dahi based gravy. This is a no onion no garlic Gujarati recipe. With some basic spices and the curd mixture this recipe is simply amazing. Do top it with some ghee and enjoy it with padwali rotli or rice.

  • 1 Cup Green Moong
  • 2 Tablespoons of Gram Flour (Besan)
  • 2-3 Tablespoons of Curd (Dahi)
  • 1 Inch Finely Chopped Ginger (Adrak)
  • 4-5 Finely Chopped Green Chilies (Hari Mirch)
  • 1 Teaspoon Mustard Seeds (Rai)
  • 1 Teaspoon Cumin Seeds (Jeera)
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Asafoetida (Hing)
  • 2-3 Cloves (Laung)
  • 2 Dried Red Chilies (Sukhi Lal Mirch)
  • 10-12 Curry Leaves (Kadi Patta)
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Turmeric Powder (Haldi)
  • 1-1.5 Teaspoon Red Chilli (Lal Mirch) Powder
  • 1 Teaspoon Dhana Jeera Powder
  • Coriander Leaves (Dhania)
  • Salt
  • Water
  • Oil
  • Ghee (Optional)


  1. Wash green moong and add it to pressure cooker. Add water and boil it. Cook for 2 whistles and later on cook on low flame for 5-7 minutes to boil the green moong well.
  2. In a mixing bowl take gram flour, curd and little water. Whisk it well.
  3. Heat some oil in kadhai and add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, asafoetida, cloves, dried red chilies and curry leaves. Sauté it well.
  4. Add finely chopped ginger and finely chopped green chilies. Stir it well.
  5. Add gram flour-curd mixture, turmeric powder, red chilli powder, dhana jeera powder and mix well.
  6. Add boiled green moong, salt and water. Mix well. Close lid and cook for 2-3 minutes.
  7. Add some coriander leaves and serve it with some ghee. Khatta Mag Nu Shaak is ready.
