No Gujarati Wedding is complete without the traditional Gujarati Dal. Gujarati Dal or Khati Meethi Dal is an authentic Gujarati dish which is usually prepared in traditional Gujarati functions. This dal has peculiar sour and sweet taste. The sourness is due to tomato and lemon while the sweetness is provided by jaggery. It is a very simple recipe but extremely delicious.
Recipe:
Ingredients:
  • 1-1.5 Cup Washed Tuvar Dal
  • 12-15 Pieces of Yam (Suran)
  • ½ Cup Peanuts (Singdana)
  • 1 Chopped Tomato
  • ½ Teaspoon Turmeric Powder (Haldi)
  • 1-1.5 Teaspoon Dhana Jeera Powder
  • 1.5-2 Teaspoon Red Chili (Lal Mirch) Powder
  • 1-1.5 Teaspoon Dal Shaak Masala
  • Juice of 1 Lemon
  • 1-1.5 Teaspoon Jaggery
  • Salt
  • Water
For Tempering:
  • 1 Teaspoon Mustard Seeds (Rai)
  • ½ Teaspoon Asafoetida (Hing)
  • 1 Teaspoon Fenugreek Seeds (Methi Daana)
  • 4-5 Cloves (Laung)
  • 2-3 Cinnamon Pieces (Dalchini)
  • 2-3 Dried Red Chilies (Lal Sukhi Mirch)
  • 8-10 Curry Leaves (Kadi Patta)
  • Oil
Procedure:
  1. In an utensil add washed tuver dal, yam, peanuts and water. Keep this utensil in cooker in boil the ingredients.
  2. After the dal is boiled well whisk it.
  3. Now in a kadhai add the dal mixture, add some water and stir it till it starts to boil
  4. Add chopped tomato, turmeric powder, dhana jeera powder and red chili powder. Mix well and stir till it begins to boil.
  5. Now add dal shaak masala, lemon juice, jaggery and salt. Mix well.
  6. For tempering heat some oil and add mustard seeds, asafoetida, fenugreek seeds, cloves, cinnamon, dried red chilies and curry leaves. Add the tempering to the dal and mix well. Traditional Gujarati Dal is ready.
