Moraiyo Khichdi Recipe - Janmasthami Special Upvas Recipe - Sama ke Chawal

On the occasion of Janmashtami we would like to present a upvas recipe prepared from Moraiyo or Sama ke Chawal. This traditional khatti moraiyo khichdi is often prepared on fasting occasion like Agiyaras, Navratri or Janmashtami. In this recipe we have some potatoes and some peanuts to give it a nice texture and taste. Also addition of curd and coriander leaves elevates the taste level of the recipe. Recipe:
Ingredients:
  • 1 Cup of Moraiyo (Sama Ke Chawal)
  • ½ Cup of Curd (Dahi)
  • ½ Cup of Coarsely Grinded Peanuts (Singdana)
  • 1 Diced Potato
  • 2-3 Finely Chopped Green Chillies (Hari Mirch)
  • 10-12 Curry Leaves (Kadi Patta)
  • 1 Teaspoon Cumin Seeds (Jeera)
  • Coriander Leaves (Dhania)
  • Salt
  • Water
  • Ghee
Procedure:
  1. Heat some ghee and add cumin seeds,  finely chopped green chillies and curry leaves. Sauté it well. Add diced potato and stir well. Close lid and cook for 2-3 minutes on a low flame.
  2. Now add moraiyo (sama ke chawal) and roast it well.
  3. Add curd, coarsely grinded roasted peanuts and mix well.
  4. Add water as per requirement and stir well. Add salt and coriander leaves. Mix well. Close lid and cook for 3-5 minutes. Moraiyo Khichdi is ready.
