To Boil the Dal:
  • 1 Cup Chana Dal
  • 1 Cup Tur Dal
  • ½ Teaspoon Turmeric Powder
  • Water
  • Salt
For Preparation:
  • 1 Finely Chopped Onion
  • 2 Finely Chopped Tomatoes
  • 2-3 Finely Chopped Green Chillies (Hari Mirch)
  • 1.5 Finely Chopped Ginger (Adrak)
  • 8-10 Finely Chopped Garlic Cloves (Lehsun)
  • 2 Cinnamon sticks (Dalchini)
  • 2-3 Bay Leaves (Tej Patta)
  • 3-4 Cloves (Laung)
  • 1 Teaspoon Cumin Seeds (Jeera)
  • ½ Teaspoon Asafoetida (Hing)
  • ½ Teaspoon Turmeric Powder (Haldi)
  • 1.5 -2 Teaspoon Red Chilli (Lal Mirch) Powder
  • 2 Teaspoon Dhana Jeera Powder
  • 1 Teaspoon Garam Masala
  • Coriander Leaves (Dhania)
  • Salt
  • Water
  • Ghee
For Tadka:
  • 3-4 Round Red Chillies (Boria Mirch)
  • 4-5 Chopped Garlic Cloves (Lehsun)
  • 1 Teaspoon Red Chilli (Lal Mirch) Powder
  • ½ Teaspoon Asafoetida (Hing)
  • Ghee
Procedure:
  1. In a cooker, add the washed tur dal and washed chana dal. Add turmeric powder and water.
  2. Give it a stir and let it boil for 4-5 whistles.
  3. Heat some ghee and add cinnamon sticks, bay leaves, cloves and cumin seeds. Stir well.
  4. Add asafoetida and chopped onion. Stir till onion turns slightly golden brown.
  5. Now add chopped green chillies, chopped ginger, chopped garlic and stir well.
  6. Add chopped tomatoes and cook it well.
  7. Add turmeric powder, red chilli powder, dhana jeera powder, garam masala and mix well.
  8. Now add previously cooked dal, salt and mix well.
  9. Add water as per requirement and some coriander leaves. Mix well.
  10. Heat ghee for tadka, add garlic cloves, asafoetida, round red chillies and red chilli powder.
  11. Add this tadka to the Dal and Dal Tadka is ready to enjoy with hot parathas or rice.
