Chana Dal Nu Shaak | Maharashtrian Amti Recipe | Gujarati Rasoi

Amti is a traditional Maharashtrian recipe which is often enjoyed with Bhakri. Chana Dal Amti is prepared with traditional Maharashtrian Kala Masala consisting of burnt onions, dried coconut, dried red chillies and green chillies. The boiled chana dal is cooked with this masala and some traditional Indian Spices. This recipe is known for its spicy taste and the burnt essence of the kala masala. Amti is served with onions and lemon and is eaten with hot Bajri Bhakri. Recipe: Ingredients –
  • 3 Cups Boiled Chana Dal
  • 4 Burnt Onions
  • ¼ Cup Burnt Dried Coconut
  • ½ Cup Coriander Leaves
  • 2 Dried Red Chillies
  • 3 Green Chillies
  • 1 Teaspoon Coriander Seeds
  • 10-12 Garlic Cloves
  • 1.5 Inch Ginger
  • 4-5 Curry Leaves
  • 5-6 Chopped Garlic Cloves
  • Pinch of Asafoetida (Hing)
  • ½ Teaspoon Turmeric Powder
  • 2 Teaspoon Red Chilli Powder
  • 1 Teaspoon Dhana Jeera Powder
  • 1 ½ Teaspoon Garam Masala
  • Salt
  • Water
  • Oil
Method –
  1. Heat oil in a pan and add the burnt onions and mash them.
  2. Add burnt dried coconut, dried red chillies, green chillies, coriander seeds, garlic, ginger and coriander leaves.
  3. Mix the ingredients well and then grind it to make a paste.
  4. Now in the same heated oil add asafoetida, curry leaves, chopped garlic cloves and stir well.
  5. Let it cook for 3-5 minutes.
  6. Now add turmeric powder, red chilli powder, dhana jeera masala and garam masala.
  7. Mix the masalas well.
  8. Add the boiled chana dal and mix well.
  9. Add salt and adequate amount of water.
  10. Close lid and cook for 5-7 minutes.
  11. Chana Dal Nu Shaak is ready to enjoy with a slice of lemon and onion.
